Let C be the cost of the purchase and let T be the number of two-dollar bills and F be the number of five-dollar bills I have to pay.
C = 5F = 2T = 2(9+F)
5F = 18 + 2F
5F - 2F = 18
3F = 18
F = 6
C = 5F = 5*6 = 30
Cost of the purchase is $30.
